The question is one that is asked frequently, and recently came up in a conversation with a new client. The quick answer is no…
Even when funds are labeled “green” or “ESG” it is important to understand that these labels mean different things to different managers and investors. Some focus on corporate governance, some focus on diversity and labor issues, some focus on shareholder activism, some focus on environmental issues. It is important to look deeper into your investments to make sure they align with your expectations and demands.
I recently met with a new client who had a portfolio invested in ESG and green funds and had directed her manager to not invest in fossil fuel companies.
When I looked at their underlying holdings in those funds all of them had fossil fuel companies in their portfolios; These included oil and gas producers, drilling companies and coal companies.
When I showed this to the client, they were furious.
The bottom line as an investor, you need to do your own due-diligence and self-examination. Be clear on what you want your money invested in, as well as what you don’t want it invested in. As an investor, you have the ability to invest the way you want, and to manage risks others might not appreciate.
